Year 6

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope this letter finds you well. It’s hard to believe that we are now beginning the Summer term and the children’s final term here at Beechwood. The time has flown by!

Summer is one of our busiest terms. In week 4, the children will be tackling their end of KS2 SATs tests. They have worked incredibly hard in school – thank you for the support you have given them with their revision at home . Once the tests are finished, the children will also have to complete their assessed writing collection.

Aside from the English and Maths tests, we have plenty of exciting topics coming up as part of our wider curriculum. We will be visiting Portsmouth to consolidate our World War II studies as well as exploring our Geography topic ‘Crumbling Coasts’. In Science, we will be learning about electricity followed by the human circulatory system. Our RE focus begins with the concept of wisdom while the children will have the chance to develop their drawing, sketching and sculpting skills in Art.

In addition to our visit to Portsmouth, we will also be going to Paultons Park in July. We aim to raise as much money for this as possible through the children’s Enterprise Project and have been so impressed with the enthusiasm and creativity the children have shown so far regarding innovative ideas. We will be using the afternoons during SATs weeks to plan our stalls and finalise our marketing strategies!  We are also currently drawing up plans for the Year 6 production which the children will find out more about in the first week of the Summer term.

Our PSHE learning focuses on how we manage change; this will support the transition work we will complete in school in advance of the move to secondary school. Your child’s secondary school will also be in touch to offer transition activities and visits.

As usual, the page overleaf contains details of the project homework we are setting for this term. In the run-up to SATs, we ask that the children keep practising their times tables and other number facts, as well as spellings. Some of you have chosen to purchase CGP revision books too; if the children wish to share any of their work with us or members of SLT, please send it into school with them. As ever, we recommend the children continue to read a wide range of high-quality fiction and non-fiction books to help extend their vocabulary and understanding of authorial intent.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

The Year 6 Team

Year 6 Summer 1 Curriculum Homework – Due on Thursday 22nd May

Geography Study – Let’s all go to the coast!

In this topic, we will be thinking about the physical and human processes we see at the coast. Please create a piece of homework relating to this. It could be:

  • Some research about erosion and deposition at the coast, rock formations or sea defences, which could be presented in an information poster or booklet.
  • Research into how humans use our coastline (e.g. shipping, tourism), possibly through a local study, which could be a presentation or map.
  • A model of a local coastline or some artwork of a coastal area you have visited.

The choice is yours!

Year 6 Summer 2 Curriculum Homework – Due on Thursday 17th July

PSHE

As the children come to finishing their time at Beechwood, we would love them to make something to commemorate their time here. This could be anything you like. It could celebrate lots of your favourite memories or one specific memory.

You could present it as:

-a poem

-a poster

-a drawing

-a written recount
