Dear Parents and Carers,
This last term has absolutely flown by. It’s certainly true what they say about Spring Term being the term in which children make the most progress. We have seen some amazing learning during this term – particularly in writing – and we are looking forward to seeing the children become even more secure as they move into their final term with us.
Please continue to help by supporting your child with their reading and times tables at home. In Year Three, we expect our children to log three reads every week and to spend some time on TTRockstars to develop their times tables knowledge before the multiplication check in Year 4. We also expect our children to participate in the home learning project that we set every half term. This enables them to consolidate learning and develop their own interests in the topics we study. Our homework station remains available for those who wish to take some extra work home.
In Summer One, we will be swapping to Geography and will be comparing land use in our local area. We will take a trip to Bitterne Precinct as well as walking to the local allotments to see how land is used differently. In DT, we will be working on our sewing skills in our first textiles project (any practise opportunities you can provide at home in advance would be much appreciated). Also if sewing is an interest, please look out for our letter asking for volunteers to come and help support the children.
In Summer Two, we will be finishing the year by learning about the Romans and our final art unit which is drawing, painting and sculpture. RE will involve learning about the concepts of ceremony and the word sacred (both with a focus on Sikhism). We also wanted to provide some advance warning that in Summer Two, we will be taking Year 3 on a trip to Winchester Science Museum with an approximate cost of £19!
During Summer Term in maths, we will be telling the time; reading pictograms and bar charts; learning about fractions; studying angles; looking at lines and shape and finishing with perimeter. In writing, we will be building on skills that we have already learnt including writing a range of sentences; using expanded noun phrases to describe; adding speech into stories and developing our characters, settings and plots. What a busy term!
As you are already aware, our P.E. days continue to be on Mondays and Wednesdays this term. In Summer One, Mondays will return to indoor PE and Wednesdays will be Outdoor PE. Please remember that on our PE days children need to come in wearing PE kit that consists of their house colour t-shirt and dark coloured bottoms and black trainers (please ensure they wear their school jumper or cardigan and not a sports top on these days). If your child has long hair, please ensure it is tied back on these days and where possible, remove earrings or cover them in advance.
Below is the topic homework for this term. We cannot wait to see what exciting projects the children produce from it. We do not mind how this work is presented- it can be a presentation, a letter, a recorded video, sculpture, model or a piece of artwork. If you need to send in your homework via email, please drop us a message at info@beechwoodjuniorschool.co.uk with your child’s teacher and child’s name as the subject.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher or Miss Coomber. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Best wishes,
The Year 3 Team: Miss Coomber, Miss Bath, Mrs James, Mrs Duke, Miss Billingham, Miss Stokes and Miss Jordan.

Creative Writing
For this project, we would love your child to be creative! Perhaps they could write a story or produce a comic or maybe create a page for a non-fiction book all about something they are interested in. Any type of writing practise would be amazing and would help your child to really consolidate their learning from school.

History Study
The Romans
What did the Romans ever do for us? Join us in exploring some of the wonders of the Roman age. Perhaps you could build your own villa; create a wonderful mosaic; or even design your own shield for a Roman soldier.
