Year 6

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back. We’ve had a fantastic first term together in Year 6 with so many highlights ranging from creating out own fairy tales, team building within residential week and taking on the challenge of making delicious scones. We are very proud of how hard the children have already worked, and how enthusiastic they have been about the wide range of topics we have been learning about.

We have another exciting term ahead. We have already started our exciting history topic considering the impact Southampton had during World War II and the strategic importance that it played. In PSHE, we will be looking at the importance of free speech and how to respectfully express opinions. We will be looking at evolution and inheritance in both animals and human in science. Also in art, the children will have the opportunity to use computers to manipulate images, considering the emotions that can be conveyed through this.

In Spring 2, we will switch back to our DT topic and focus on drawing, printing and sculpting. We will also be returning to the geography topic of globalisation where the children will have the opportunity to build on their previous knowledge of trade.

If you would like to see the full list of wider curriculum topics we will be covering, please follow the link below for the school’s website. Curriculum – Beechwood Junior School

Our P.E. days will remain on Wednesday and then Thursday (Goodall and Irwin class) or Friday (Attenborough class) this term. Please remember that on our PE days children need to come in wearing PE kit that consists of a plain colour t-shirt and dark coloured bottoms. If you child has long hair, please ensure it is tied back on these days.

Our next round of mock sats will be happening the week beginning 26th January. We will be using these to track progress as well as identify gaps in learning to inform our planning.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

The Year 6 Team

Year 6 Spring 2 Curriculum Homework –Due Monday 23rd March

History

Pick someone who was involved in World War II. Present in any way you like, why they were significant.

You could consider:

-What was their job?

-What actions did they take?

-Where were they in the war?

You could consider:

A family member involved in the war

A solider

A nurse

Someone who worked in the factories

If you do not have a family member or friend you could contact about this, please research a significant figure within the war.
