Dear Parents and Carers,
Firstly, we hope you all had a lovely summer break. We are really looking forward to starting a new term and getting started on our amazing curriculum.
Before half term, we will be studying rivers in geography; we are currently in the process of arranging a trip to study our local river. We will send the information to you as soon as this is confirmed. We will also be learning about the sounds of autumn in music and designing and making autumnal soup in DT. Why not try to incorporate some soup tasting at home to enable the children to think about flavours and textures? It would certainly help them to plan their own recipes. In science, we will be studying properties of materials which will tie in nicely with the heating, melting and freezing which could occur in DT!
After half term, we will be changing to our history focus and will be learning about the early Islamic civilisation. We will also be studying great artists who are historically and culturally significant: William Morris, Sheila Hicks and Barbara Hepworth. If you would like to know more about what we will be learning in school this term our curriculum maps are available on the school website.
PE lessons will be on a Tuesday and a Thursday this term. Please remember that on our PE days children need to come in wearing PE kit that consists of a plain colour t-shirt (house colour) and dark coloured bottoms. If your child has long hair, please ensure it is tied back.
With regards to what you can do at home to support your child’s learning, we encourage as much reading as possible. If you can hear your child read and record it on Boom that would be great. We would also like your child to practise their spelling homework each week. This will be given out on a Monday and tested the following Monday. In Year 5, there will be a homework station for the children to use; there will be a selection of homework available to choose from (this is optional). We would also encourage regular practice of times tables, and practising telling the time using both analogue and digital clocks if your child is not yet confident. In Maths, during the Autumn Term, we will be focusing on place value of numbers up to a million as well as rounding. In English, we will be focusing largely on sentence structure as the building blocks to quality writing using ‘The Man Who Walked Between The Towers’ as our initial inspiration. Additional time spent looking into the life of Phillippe Petit would support your child enormously as they work towards writing their biographies about him in a few weeks.
Below is the topic homework for this term. We cannot wait to see what exciting projects the children produce. Please see some of the choices for presenting the homework. If your child would like to do something different, please just ask. If you need to send in your homework via email, please make sure your teacher is expecting to receive it so they can check all files.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher and thank you for your ongoing support. We are excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to work with the children and with all of you.
Best wishes,
The Year 5 Team
