Year 5

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Spring Term! We are so proud of our children, who have worked super hard in Autumn. We can’t wait to see the progress they will make during this new term.

Over this term – in English – we will be studying various texts: Robot Girl, Percy Jackson and the lightning thief and Hidden Figures. We will be continuing to develop our skills through writing different text types both fiction and non-fiction. In maths, we will continue to work through the ‘Maths No Problem’ curriculum beginning with fractions and moving onto decimals and percentages. Please check the school website for more information.

In geography we will be studying urban environments in North and South America. In PSHE, we will be learning about physical contact and boundaries as well as medicines. In RE, we will be looking at ‘sacred’ and ‘faith’ as concepts. In science we will be looking at life cycles including gestational periods of mammals. In computing we will be learning about databases as well as graphic design. In DT we will be making cam toys. If you would like to know more about what we will be learning in school this term our curriculum maps are available on the school website. Spring Year 5 – Beechwood Junior School

PE lessons will continue to be on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please remember, that on PE days children need to come in wearing PE kit that consists of a plain colour t-shirt of their house and black bottoms (or dark grey/navy). If your child has long hair, please ensure it is tied back. A school fleece or cardigan is essential.

To support your child’s learning, we encourage as much reading as possible. Please try to listen to your child read aloud and record it on Boom (3 times a week). If using a device is tricky at home, we provide a tablet and log in information in class to record reads so please encourage your child to log it the following day. We also encourage regular practice of times tables, should you require your TTRockstars log in then email your child’s class teacher.

Below is the topic homework for this term. We cannot wait to see what exciting projects the children produce. The children can present their work however they want – the aim is to get creative! If you need to send in your homework via email, please do so via the office email.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher. Thank you for your ongoing support. We are excited for the term ahead!

Best wishes,

The Year 5 Team

Year 5 Spring 1 Curriculum Homework – Due in Monday 9th February

Geography: North and South America

Our Geography topic this half term is North and South America. Why not pick a country from either continent to study? You could research the Amazon rainforest or the states of America: anything of interest to you.

You could then:

· Create a travel brochure.

· Study a natural wonder of the world like Niagra Falls

· Create a poster dedicated to your country or continent

· Make a powerpoint

· Make top trumps cards/a game

Year 5 Spring 2 Curriculum Homework – Due in Monday 23rd March

History: The Ancient Greeks

Choose one aspect and present your research in an interesting way.

You could:

· Find out about Greek gods and goddesses. Perhaps you could make a Top Trumps style game based on them?

· Research the ancient Olympic Games. How about a board game based on this theme?

· Create a biography of a famous ancient Greek e.g. Alexander the Great or Aristotle.

· Retell a Greek myth or create your own version of a Greek myth.

· Do your own idea.
