Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back! We hope you had a restful summer break! Firstly, we would like to welcome you and your child to Year 6 and their final year at Beechwood! We know that the children are likely to be a bit nervous about coming back to school, but we are so excited for this year and all the exciting things we’ve got planned. Year 6 is a really special year where the children are granted more independence and exciting responsibilities as part of preparing for secondary school.
We have launched straight into our autumn term learning since returning to school. This half term, we will be studying the exciting history topic of Ancient Maya where we look at a variety of sources to explore how developed this civilisation was compared to ones we have previously studied such as: Romans, Egyptians and Greeks. In Science, we have begun studying how to classify living things while in R.E. we are considering the concept of belonging and what this means to different people. In this half term, we will also be studying great artists who have had historical and cultural significance as well as exploring different types of relationships in PSHE.
After half term, we begin will continue to explore a wide range of subjects. Excitingly, we will also begin our first DT project looking into a range of dietary requirements and how to adapt foods for these needs. If you would like to know more about what we will be learning in school this term, we now have our Curriculum Maps on the school website.
Curriculum Overview – Beechwood Junior School
Our P.E. days are as follows: Wednesday (whole year group), Thursday (Goodall and Irwin class) and Friday (Attenborough class). Please remember that on our PE days children need to come in wearing PE kit that consists of a plain colour t-shirt and dark coloured bottoms. If you child has long hair, please ensure it is tied back on these days.
With regards to what you can do at home, after half term we will be accepting applications for House Captains and School Council. Please help your children with their application if you can, to ensure it is the best it can be. We also hope that the children will complete their Boom Reader logs at home; our target is for each child to read for at least 10 minutes three times a week.
Below is the topic homework for this term. We cannot wait to see what exciting projects the children produce from it. We do not mind how this work is presented- it can be a presentation, a letter, a recorded video, sculpture, model or a piece of artwork. If you need to send in your homework via email, please make sure your teacher is expecting to receive it so they can check all files.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Best wishes,
The Year 6 Team
